About

Founding Story

CondeHouse, a leader in Japan's furniture industry, and Northern Forest, which has achieved high added value through the precise sourcing of Hokkaido's forest resources—these two companies shared a wish: to contribute to the sustainability of Hokkaido's forests and Asahikawa's furniture industry through the making of liquor barrels from Hokkaido timber. In 2023, this led to the launch of the Asahikawa Barrel Project. Drawing together a diverse group of members from industry, academia, and government, the project advanced steadily and, in 2025, moved into its commercialization phase. By combining CondeHouse's precise woodworking technology with Northern Forest's exceptional sourcing capability, Hokkaido Barrel was established on March 10, 2025, to plan, manufacture, and sell beautiful liquor barrels made from Hokkaido timber.

CondeHouse

A wooden furniture maker founded in 1968 in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. Since its founding, CondeHouse has been devoted to making in Asahikawa—one of Japan's foremost furniture-producing regions—pursuing uncompromising product development together with designers from Japan and abroad, while bringing to its design and craftsmanship an aesthetic sensibility nurtured by Hokkaido's nature and Japanese culture. Through precise woodworking that brings together state-of-the-art machinery and skilled artisanship at the highest level, and through making in harmony with nature—including the active use of Hokkaido timber—CondeHouse continues to deliver wooden furniture, made to be passed down across generations, to the world. It is this precise technical capability that underpins Hokkaido Barrel's barrel-making.

Northern Forest

A company engaged in the full process from log sourcing to distribution, centered on Hokkaido broadleaf trees. In response to the reality that roughly 90% of Hokkaido's broadleaf timber is consumed as pulp or fuel, Northern Forest promotes the Hokkaido Broadleaf Timber Utilization Project, which raises the value of timber by clearly managing the regional origin of each log and ensuring traceability. Its work spans building a distribution network on an all-Hokkaido scale, rediscovering unused timber, and realizing a timber distribution in which origins are visible. Deep knowledge of Hokkaido's forest resources and a distinctive network make possible an exceptional precision in sourcing—the starting point of Hokkaido Barrel's barrel-making.

Singular value,
for makers and drinkers around the world.

Hokkaido Barrel was born from the fusion of two rare capabilities: an exceptional precision in sourcing, made possible by deep knowledge of Hokkaido timber and a distinctive network, and an exceptional precision in craft, applying the fine-woodworking expertise cultivated through Asahikawa Furniture. Free from convention, we widen the possibilities of the barrel through a diverse range of wood species, and we craft barrels with a clear sense of where the wood comes from—barrels that carry a story all their own. In doing so, we expand what a drink can become, heighten its rarity, and deliver singular value to makers and drinkers around the world.
